Signal Characteristics of EMG at Different Levels of Muscle Tension

Electromyographic activity of m. rectus femoris at submaximal and maximal voluntary contractions was quantified by conventional integration technique and also be a more "qualitative" procedure of automated motor unit averaging and frequency spectrum analysis. By relating the EMG parameters to produced muscle tension it was observed that the integrated EMG increased in a slightly nonlinear fashion with the increase in muscle force. The other EMG variables also showed clear changes as a function of muscle tension. Muscle tone in different joint positions and at submaximal isometric torque levels

The aim was to evaluate the tone and electric activity of the quadriceps muscle at rest and different torque levels. The second aim was to study whether thickness of soft tissues and change in the joint position would affect muscle tone. Eighteen healthy subjects participated. Computerized muscle tonometer (CMT) and surface electromyography (sEMG) measurements were performed: seated, first at rest with leg straight and then with the knee at 60 degrees . The F response can provide a measure of motoneurone excitability (MNE) and so it may be used to investigate upper motoneurone disorders. This report studies the F-wave configuration in patients with stroke to evaluate the changes of the central excitability of the motoneurones at different times after an acute cerebral insult. Various parameters of the F response, including amplitude (absolute and F%/M), duration, and persistence have been determined in 26 patients with unilateral hemiplegia and in 32 healthy subjects of both sexes in the same age range. Objective To evaluate the short- and long-term efficacy of exercise therapy in a warm, waist-high pool in women with fibromyalgia. Abstract Noradrenaline, 1 μm, induced a sustained contractile response in rat isolated aorta in the presence and in the absence of extracellular Ca2+. After depleting the noradrenaline-sensitive intracellular Ca2+ stores, an increase in the basal tone of the aorta was observed during the incubation period in the presence of Ca2+ and in the absence of the agonist. We have tested the possible pathways through which Ca2+ enters the cell to refill the previously depleted Ca2+ pools, a process that is accompanied by an increase in tension. In rat aorta, depletion of internal Ca2+ stores by addition of noradrenaline (1 microM) induces a biphasic response (an initial phasic response and a tonic one) mediated by two different intracellular Ca2+ pools. This response cannot be repeated, suggesting a depletion of internal Ca2+ stores sensitive to noradrenaline. In absence of the agonist, this depletion is the signal for the entry of extracellular Ca2+, not only to refill the stores but also, under our experimental conditions, to activate the contractile proteins thus inducing an increase in the resting tone (IRT) that constitutes functional evidence of this Ca2+ entry. Effect of dantrolene sodium in isolated guinea-pig trachea.

The effect of dantrolene sodium (3 microM-0.3 mM) on the spontaneous tone and responses to various contractile agonists was studied in isolated guinea-pig trachea. Dantrolene produced a concentration-related inhibition of the spontaneous tracheal tone, reaching a value of 94.8 +/- 4.8% of the relaxation induced by caffeine 10 mM. Removal of the epithelium did not affect the dantrolene-induced relaxation. Dantrolene did not alter the concentration-response curve for KCl and produced only small displacements of the concentration-response curves for CaCl2, acetylcholine and histamine, without affecting their maximal effects. Abstract The effects of cromakalim were examined in tracheal strips isolated from normal (unsensitized) guinea-pigs and from animals actively sensitized to bovine serum albumin. Sensitized tracheae exhibited hyper-responsiveness to KCl, acetylcholine and histamine. In normal and sensitized tracheae, cromakalim (0·01–10 μm) produced a concentration-related suppression of spontaneous tone. The ability of cromakalim to relax tracheal strips was reduced when tone was raised by KCl (25 Mm), acetylcholine (0·1 Mm) or histamine (0·1 Mm) and lost against KCl (120 Mm)-induced spasm. Background We studied the participation of K + channels on the adrenergic responses in human saphenous veins as well as the intervention of dihydropyridine-sensitive Ca 2+ channels on modulation of adrenergic responses by K + channels blockade. Methods Saphenous vein rings were obtained from 40 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery. The vein rings were suspended in organ bath chambers for isometric recording of tension.
